My Choker

I’ll save the story behind my choker later. Let’s just say it means a lot to me. My best friend’s mother gave it to me before I went through a special rite of passage. Yes, they are Indigenous.

I feel like the choker gave me strength during my near death experience, and it continues to give me strength to this day.

Why?

For one, that Matoaka’s people allowed me to go through their rite means the world to me. Their confidence in me still gives me confidence.

For two, going through that rite wasn’t easy. Going through it for whatever reason still gives me psychological strength. This choker is a reminder (and emblem) of that.
